Mulching
Applying mulch around trees, shrubs, and other plants in your yard will keep the soil cool and moist, and help plants grow. Other benefits include: weed control, temperature control, attractive appearance, moisture retention, prevention of compaction and soil texture improvement.
When to Fertilize
Avoid fertilizing during periods of drought and extremely dry weather. It could only end up burning your lawn if moisture is not present. Make sure you water before and after each application. Under extreme drought and dry conditions, you can even delay or cancel that application to give your lawn enough time to recover. Fertilizing during these periods can cause your lawn to grow faster, needing more water and mowing to stay healthy. That can mean more work for you!
Avoid Having Birds Eat up your newly laid lawn seed...
Run string from stake to stake aournd and across the seeded area, and attach one-inch by one-foot strips of aluminum to the string every 1-1/2 feet. These strips will twist and flash in the air in even just a gentle breeze, which will discourage birds from coming anywhere near.
Heavy Traffic on Your Lawn
If your lawn gets heavy traffic, increase its resilience by adding fertilizer and soil amendments that encourage strong root growth.
